In business, it’s often the team leader who brings people together to accomplish a project goal. The role of the team leader requires leadership skills that include vision, motivation and coaching. Team leaders must also know how to build trust and develop relationships among team members.

One of the most important tasks a team leader must complete is to set clear, aligned priorities for everyone on their team. Team members look to their leader for guidance and direction, and the slightest miscalculation can throw everything off-course. Getting a clear picture of the team’s priorities will help avoid the common pitfalls that can arise during a project.

To work on your own team leadership skills, identify one or two areas in which you want to improve and create a plan for improvement (i.e., if you want to improve your listening skills, start holding one-on-one conversations with your teammates). Read books on the topic and take time each day to practice your new skills. The best way to become a strong team leader is to be one.
