Diamonds are one of the world’s most valuable objects. They were formed billions of years ago and pushed hundreds of kilometers into the earth’s crust by volcanic eruptions. Now, a growing number of companies are producing lab-created diamonds. These are produced at a much lower cost than natural diamonds and are posing a significant challenge to the diamond mining industry. Several leading jewellery stores now carry manufactured diamonds.

Although lab-grown diamonds are still relatively new, they are already becoming popular, particularly among millennials. They don’t compete with mined diamonds in price, and they’re also more environmentally friendly. In fact, some companies are already certified carbon-neutral, which means that their cut-and-polished processes use 100 per cent renewable energy.
