For Good News Toronto readers who enjoy a tasty treat that doubles as a nutritious energy boost and triples as a Fathers’ Day pre-feast family project, this macho cocktail fits the bill in a win-win-win way. It’s perfect for daddies, wives of daddies, mothers, brothers, and sisters of daddies, and especially for sons and daughters of daddies to make and to share.

Daddy’s Day Wheatgrass Jungle Juice Smoothie

These are the fine fresh foods you need to treat Dad’s taste buds — and your own:

· 1 cup of cleaned and shredded kale

· 1 cup of chopped broccoli (optional)

· 1 apple

· 1 pear

· 1 mango or 1 cup of mango pulp

· 1 cup of fresh pineapple or 1 ½ cups of pineapple juice

· 1 oz of wheatgrass juice or 1 tbsp of wheatgrass powder per 8oz of smoothie (optional)

1. With delight in the warmth of beckoning Canadian summer, skip with the whole family down to the fancy fruitique you frequent. Fresh air, exercise, and family time are all essential ingredients in Daddy’s Day Smoothies.

2. Back at the ranch, carefully clean the fruits and veggies and slice like the Ginsu chef we all want to be. Make sure that’s the big person’s job! Smoothie safety rules are made with love, and should not be broken. But everybody can work together to clean the kale like crazy to get off all the gritty good ground it grew in.

3. Dump all the ingredients into the blender and go full throttle until Daddy can’t tell there’s any broccoli in there — unless he likes broccoli, that is. Daring Daddies love all that goes into smoothies made with love by kind kids in good Fathers’ Day fun — it’s just a bonus if it’s healthy.

4. For those who enjoy “with-pulp,” Daddy’s drink is ready to serve in his favourite #1 Dad mug. For those who like pulp-free drinking, please strain to remove what he wouldn’t love so much before it gets into his mug. Garnish with a smile on your face and sing For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow, making a toast to dear old Dad. For a thicker, cooler smoothie, you might add ice to be blended in at the rocket-speed setting.

For those who have the acquired taste, mix things up a bit with the optional 1oz of wheatgrass juice or 1 tbsp of wheatgrass juice powder in each 8oz serving. What works best is to drink the manly mixture on its own at least 20 minutes before or one hour after a meal. For more fountain-of-youth tips and recipes, contact Nuramina at nuramina@rogers.com.
